CONCORD – The Jay M. Robinson football team traveled to Waxhaw to take on Marvin Ridge, and the trip didn’t end well for the Cream of Cabarrus No. 5 Bulldogs, as the Mavericks took a 56-0 victory.
The Mavericks were playing their first contest of the year after bad weather postponed their matchup with Porter Ridge a week ago. Jay M. Robinson fell to 1-1 overall, 0-0 in the South Piedmont 3A Conference.
The Mavericks got off to a fast start, as Ethan Robitialle returned the opening kickoff for an 80-yd score to set up a 49-point first half, and they never looked back.
“Yeah, they returned the opening kick, and it wasn’t our night all night,” Jay M. Robinson coach Rich Williams said in a phone interview with the Independent Tribune. “We didn’t play well offensively all night, our running game struggled, our passing game struggled, and we couldn’t block up front.”
The score after the first quarter was 21-0, as the Mavericks offense had scores to match their special teams.
After two weeks on the road, the Bulldogs return to Concord next week for their home opener against Monroe.
“We have to bounce back,” Williams said. “We have to learn from our mistakes. I think we have a good group of guys. We just have to learn from this and get better.”
