HARRISBURG – The Hickory Ridge girls basketball team jumped out to a big lead, endured a second-half rally, and hung on to hand previously undefeated Charlotte Providence a 41-36 defeat Friday night.
Providence is the seventh-ranked team in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. Hickory Ridge is listed at No. 211 by the popular high school website.
After the non-conference victory, Hickory Ridge improved its record to 6-6 on the season. Providence fell to 12-1.
The Ragin’ Bulls, who are the No. 2 team in the Independent Tribune’s Cream of Cabarrus Girls Basketball Rankings, smothered the Panthers in the first quarter and led 11-1 after one period of play. Providence started getting some momentum going in the second quarter, but Hickory Ridge stayed solid and took a 22-11 advantage into the halftime break.
Providence cut more into Hickory Ridge’s lead in the third quarter and trailed by just six points, 27-21, heading into the final period. The Ragin’ Bulls deftly handled another fierce Providence charge over the final eight minutes to take the Panthers from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Junior guard Kennedy Calhoun, who sank all four of her free throws in the final minute of action, led the way for the Ragin’ Bulls with 16 points, two assists and two steals.
