CONCORD – Holding a double-digit lead after three quarters of play, the Cox Mill girls basketball team survived a fierce rally from Northwest Cabarrus and hung on for a 55-52 road victory Friday night.
The game was a battle between two of the county’s top-ranked teams.
Cox Mill, which is fifth in the Cream of Cabarrus Girls Basketball Rankings, improved its record to 8-7 overall and 1-0 in the South Piedmont 3A Conference. No. 6 Northwest is 6-7, 1-1 in the SPC.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Cox Mill held a 40-29 lead over the Trojans. But Northwest Cabarrus stormed back by putting up 23 points in the last stanza. The Chargers, though, had the wherewithal to pull out the victory and win their fifth game in their last six outings.
Junior center Addison Sedergren posted a "double-double" with 17 points and 16 rebounds for Cox Mill, and senior wing Nya Tillery came through with 12 points.
Aliciah Fields put up a game-high 24 points for the Trojans.
