CONCORD – After sweeping the South Piedmont 3A Conference boys and girls cross country team titles this season, Cox Mill walked away – or ran away – with the league’s top two individual awards also.
Cox Mill’s Alex Garcia is the 2019 SPC Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, while the Chargers’ Jessie Connick is the Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, the league announced.
Meanwhile, Northwest Cabarrus coach Tyrone Pierce was named the conference’s coach of the year.
For Connick, a senior, being named the SPC’s top girls runner was the culmination of a gold-medal-riddled season, as she also won the Cabarrus Country Cross Country Championships and the SPC Championship. She later was 16th at the 3A Midwest Regional meet and finished 22nd at the Class 3A state meet.
Joining Connick on the All-SPC girls team this fall are Cox Mill’s Alexa Loney; Central Cabarrus’ Soledad Ruiz, Meredith Sheridan and Savannah Dickason; Northwest Cabarrus’ Grace Siemon; Concord’s Allyson Halbach; and A.L. Brown’s Emily Karmanocky.
A junior, Garcia won the SPC boys title this season. Before that, he took second place at the Cabarrus County Cross Country Championships. At the 3A Midwest Regional, Garcia was 17th and later went on to finish 58th at the state meet.
Joining Garcia on the All-SPC boys team are Cox Mill’s Spencer Connick and Izic Harris; Northwest Cabarrus’ Jonavan Whitaker, Raj Patel and Owen Evans; Central Cabarrus’ Derek Hill; and A.L. Brown’s Onesimo Rosas.
