CONCORD -- These are the top six teams in Cabarrus County, as chosen by the Independent Tribune Sports staff.


Previous ranking: 1

The Trojans beat Jay M. Robinson by 27 points last week, but they also gave up more points (35) than they have all season, so there are things to tighten up entering Friday’s game at No. 3 Central Cabarrus.

Quietly, the Bulls are off to their best start since 2017, their first in Class 4A, when they reached the third round of the playoffs. Friday, they visit Myers Park, which some say will be in the state title game.

The Vikings’ win last week at A.L. Brown showed they’re legitimate SPC title contenders, and Friday they get to take on the reigning champ, No. 1 Northwest Cabarrus.

The Wonders’ loss to Central was a blow to their SPC title hopes, but there’s still a lot of football to be played, plus No. 5 Cox Mill awaits Friday. 

5. COX MILL (4-3)

Previous ranking: 4

The Chargers handled winless Concord last week, but a home win Friday against A.L. Brown will keep them in the SPC title picture.


Previous ranking: 6

The Tigers open Rocky River 2A Conference play, although it starts by playing host to a tough Anson team.
