Chargers, Johnson get first win

MONROE – The Ty Johnson Era – and the Cox Mill boys basketball team’s 2019-20 season – got off to an auspicious start Tuesday night, as the Chargers gave their new coach his first victory with a 79-70 decision at Monroe Sun Valley.

But the Chargers (1-0) erupted for 26 points in the second quarter and kept up a solid pace to earn the win in Johnson’s debut as Cox Mill coach. Johnson, who previously coached at West Brunswick, replaced Jody Barbee as the Chargers’ coach.

In addition, John Anthony Baker scored 13 points for the Chargers.
