Chargers, Johnson get first win

MONROE – The Ty Johnson Era – and the Cox Mill boys basketball team’s 2019-20 season – got off to an auspicious start Tuesday night, as the Chargers gave their new coach his first victory with a 79-70 decision at Monroe Sun Valley.

The game was close after one quarter, with Cox Mill clinging to a one-point lead, 18-17. But the Chargers (1-0) erupted for 26 points in the second quarter and kept up a solid pace to earn the win in Johnson’s debut as Cox Mill coach. Johnson, who previously coached at West Brunswick, replaced Jody Barbee as the Chargers’ coach.

While much of the Cox Mill roster is new, a pair of key returners played huge roles for the team Tuesday night, as sophomore guard Jaquave Propst led the way with 19 points and senior guard Wesley Poindexter had 16 points.

In addition, John Anthony Baker scored 13 points for the Chargers.

cfa Academy gets fifth victory of season

CONCORD – The cfa Academy boys basketball team jumped out to a 12-point, first-quarter lead and went on to take a decisive 78-60 victory over visiting Northside Christian Academy Tuesday night.

Trae Benham’s hot shooting was a spark for the Eagles, as the junior guard made seven of 11 3-pointers and finished with 26 points.

The Eagles were good inside and outside, however.

Senior Youngstown State University signee Cheick Traore grabbed a whopping 22 rebounds to go with 11 points, and another cfa Academy big man, Furman signee Garrett Hien, added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Eagles improved their record to 5-1, with Javian Cannady added 12 points to their total.

Glynn Hubbard III led Northside Christian with 24 points.
