OCALA, FL./ KANNAPOLIS, N.C. James "Jim" L. Hickerson, formerly of Kannapolis, passed away at the Legacy Home Hospice in Ocala, Fla., Sunday, July 21, 2019. James was born in 1942, to the late Charles P. and Evelyn C. Hickerson in Norfolk Va. He graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School ('59), obtained a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI Class of '63) and a Master's degree in Mathematics from Clemson University ('65). While attending North Carolina State University for his Doctorate, James was called upon to serve our country in the U.S. Army with the Army Material Command. After completing his service, Jim worked in the manufacturing industry as a Quality Control Specialist predominantly in medical technology. He was involved in early testing for pacemakers, hydraulic wheelchairs, digital mammograms and other devices. Jim also taught mathematics at Coral Gables High School for several years. James was preceded in death by his wife, Susan D. Hickerson; brothers, Robert L. Hickerson and Charles P. Hickerson Jr.; niece, Catherine A. Pope; nephews, Robert L. Hickerson III and Michael C. Pope. He is survived by his life partner, Carol A. Myers; brother, Henry B. Hickerson (Sheryl); sister, Catherine E. Pope; nephews, Patrick L. Hickerson (Leslie), Thomas A. Pope (Rachel) and Jason C. Hickerson (Tisha); nieces, Virginia H. Lindsey (Jeff) and April Hickerson; sister-in-law, Carolyn K. Hickerson; 13 great-nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Beau. A celebration of Jim's life is planned for Saturday, Oct. 12, in Kannapolis. He will be buried at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Gaithersburg, Md., Monday, Oct. 14.
