Rachel Smith Harwood MT. PLEASANT Rachel Pauline Smith Harwood, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Tuesday, Sep. 24, at Atrium-Cabarrus. Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Jeremy Hyde, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at Mission Baptist Church, where she will lie in state from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow at Running Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The Harwood family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Friday, Sept. 27), at Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Harwood was born July 22, 1929, in Cabarrus County, daughter of the late Daniel Smith and Rebecca Lewis Smith. She was a member of Mission Baptist Church and was very active in church fellowship groups. She was a retired secretary having worked for Western-Southern Life Insurance, Hartsell, Hartsell and Mills Law Firm, Barber-Scotia College and J.C. Penney. She enjoyed flower gardening, dancing, sewing and playing bingo. In addition to her parents, Rachel was predeceased by her husband, Spence Harwood in 2003. She is survived by daughters, Susan Suther (Charlie), Melanie Melius (Scott); sons, Danny Harwood and Steven Harwood; grandchildren, Ashley Harwood, Stefanie Suther and Jonathan Suther (Heather); and great-grandchildren, Samantha and Cameron. Memorials may be directed to Mission Baptist Church, 12444 Mission Church Rd., Locust, NC 28097. Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant is serving the Harwood family.
