KANNAPOLIS Ms. Rosella Ethelbert Caldwell, 101, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019, in Kannapolis. She was born July 1, 1918, in Landis, the daughter of the late John Franklin Caldwell and Willie Cardella Louis Sherrill Caldwell. She received her education at Sandy Ridge School (later known as Aggrey Memorial High School) and received her high school education at Price High School in Salisbury. In 1960, Rosella received her master's degree in Science at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. As an educator, she taught geometry, biology, science, art, French, and coached the girls' basketball team, and oversaw music and the high school chorus at Johnsonville High School in Pineview in 1940. Following Johnsonville, she taught science courses (biology and chemistry), mathematics, physical education, and coached the girls' basketball team for 19 years at Peabody High School in Troy. After leaving Troy, she taught biology, chemistry, mathematics, science, and physical education at R.A. Clement High School in Cleveland, N.C. After staying in Cleveland, she transferred to A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis in 1968, and taught biology, chemistry, and science. It was here Rosella ended her career as an educator, June 13, 1980, having spent 40 years as a teacher. She was also a proud member of Sandy Ridge A.M.E. Zion Church in Landis, where she served in many organizations and ministries; notably on the Deaconess, Trustee (first lady appointed to the all-male board) and Stewardess (current chairperson of #2) boards, Home Missions Society, and Christian Education and Bible School. Not only did she serve her church, she also served the community, preparing dinners for 25 people every Tuesday, for about 25 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, James Thomas, Carl Franklin, Percy Cecil Caldwell; two sisters, Johnnie Philberta Caldwell, Elizabeth Fredonia Caldwell Roberts; and nephews, James T. Caldwell Jr. and James Deotis Roberts Jr. She is survived by her nephews, Carl F. Caldwell Jr. of Charlotte, Percy C. Caldwell Jr. of Durham, Franklin E. Caldwell of Kannapolis, David Alan Caldwell of Kannapolis, Phillip Caldwell of Kannapolis; nieces, Beverly Carpenter Nickens of Mt. Rainer, Md., Jacqueline L. Anthony of Kannapolis, Charmaine Roberts Parker of Clinton, Md., Carlita Roberts Marsh (David) of Washington, D.C., Kristina Roberts of Atlanta, Ga.; devoted sister-in-law, Margaret Caldwell of Landis; brother-in-law, Dr. James D. Roberts, Maryland; and a host of relatives and friends. Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at Sandy Ridge A.M.E. Zion Church, 1425 Mt. Moriah Church Road in Landis, with visitation at 3 p.m. and the funeral at 4 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Clarence J. Shuford Jr., pastor, will officiate.
