A Cannon School student passed away after a jet ski accident on Lake Norman over the weekend.
Rising freshman Claire Miley, the daughter of Rob and Allison Miley of Davidson, was killed in the accident involving four youths under the age of 16 on Sunday, July 21. According to news reports, two jet skis collided in open water off the tip of Peninsula Cove Lane in Cornelius at about 4:30 p.m.
“Claire was a vibrant, passionate, and bright young lady,” said Head of Middle School Carla Moyer. “She was spunky, resilient, focused, confident, positive, and quick to laugh. Most importantly, she had an amazing heart and was a constant source of forthright encouragement and support to those around her. She made Cannon a better place and she will be sorely missed.”
In an effort to provide comfort and support for students, teachers and families, Cannon School opened its Cindric Performing Arts Center Tuesday night for the purpose of counseling services. A team of counselors was present to help students who are struggling as well as parents who needed guidance on how to help their children.
“We are grieving and will grow together in the time ahead,” said Head of School Christopher Jones. “Our community is strong, and we pray that the families and students impacted by this tragedy feel this strength and support in the coming days.”
Arrangements to celebrate Miley’s life will be announced in the coming days.
