Ron SmithQ: What is your background and what qualifies you to represent the people of Harrisburg?

I have been a Harrisburg resident since 2005. I am employed at Wells Fargo and just recently celebrated my 25th year. My wife and I have been married for 19 years and have 2 children who attend Hickory Ridge High School. I was elected to serve on Harrisburg town council in 2015 and seeking a 2nd term. In my career I have been taught to be detailed oriented. While on council I have shown that I am willing to ask the hard questions and have the ability to listen to the residents. I personally love that I have the opportunity to represent the residents of Harrisburg again.

Q: What do you see as the issues facing Harrisburg right now?

Harrisburg has experienced a good amount of growth and it appears it will continue. Growth can be good and bad. I think some of the issues for Harrisburg residents are traffic, drainage and adequate roads. In my current term we have worked to get an improved drainage plan together in older sections of Harrisburg. The newer sections will be getting a water tower to help alleviate the water concerns in the summer months. I know one of the more recently discussed topics is community policing. I look forward to reviewing our Law Enforcement study to better understand how our growth and effective Police protection come together.

Q: Why are you the best person for this office?

As a current sitting council member, I take the time to listen to our residents and actively respond to requests and questions. I am not afraid to tell someone I do not have the answer but will gladly get the answer and follow up. There are several projects that have started in the last few years that personally I would like to see finished. Lastly, I have kept to my word from when I ran in 2015 where I campaigned on the platform to slow residential growth and in my current term, I voted to only support 5 of the 14 residential proposals.

Q: What goals do you have for Harrisburg, if elected?

I would like to see the Law Enforcement study completed and be able to review the plan with the community. I would like to see us put an action plan together for next steps and work to ensure the residents have the appropriate levels of law enforcement. I would like the town to expand the ways we communicate to residents and understand better how we can involve the residents more. Lastly, I would like to get a concise plan together with the NCDOT on how we can work to help alleviate some of the existing road and traffic concerns residents face today.
