I heartily praise the City of Concord for its effort to beautify the Union Street area of downtown Concord with the new Streetscape plan. When my wife and I dine in downtown Concord, we love to stroll around afterward. Both of us have mentioned that the shops are constantly changing displays and decorations. They are all unique too. In addition, it is glorious to watch children play at the Rotary Square water park. Every building in downtown is unique. Our wanderings are so much better than at a mall where every store looks so sterile and predictable.

I recall being I Greenville, SC in the late 1970s. Greenville is a spectacular, busy downtown now. Forty years ago, it looked like a ghost town. The City of Greenville began early adding trees and pedestrian friendly areas. It also built several parking garages well off the main pedestrian area. Today, Greenville is a showpiece for those of us who meander among the shops.

My strong preference is to get rid of all the on street parking on Union Street. We now have two excellent parking decks. I would go even further and take all vehicular traffic off of Union Street to make the entire downtown section a quiet pedestrian mall. We need to open up new opportunities for our downtown businesses. I think they would make the most of the opportunity.
