In a couple of years it will be time to play ball in a new stadium in Kannapolis.

The city celebrated the start of construction of its new Sports & Entertainment Venue in downtown on Chestnut Avenue by swinging for the fence and shooting off the confetti on Tuesday.

The venue will be the new home of the city’s Minor League baseball team – the Kannapolis Intimidators—and is the catalyst for the city’s Downtown Revitalization Project.

The celebration included officials from the City of Kannapolis, Cabarrus County and the Kannapolis Intimidators. While the A.L. Brown Marching Band performed, those in attendance were given mini baseball bats with the city’s logo, T-shirts and snacked on hotdogs and popcorn just like they were watching a real baseball game.

Construction was officially kicked off when city officials hit baseballs off of tees into the location where the venue will sit.

About the Sports & Entertainment Venue

The venue will also have 6,000 square feet of banquet and meeting space. It is designed as a public park with restrooms, includes a kid’s zone and will accommodate special events such as concerts.

The stadium will have a seating capacity of 4,930 with 3,218 of those being fixed seats. Other seating options will include luxury suites, a party deck, berm seating, dugout box seats, a picnic terrace, an outfield bar, right field boxes and 6,000 square feet of club/banquet space.

City staff said construction of the venue will be completed by April 2020.

More information and comments from those involved in the development will be in Friday’s paper.
