SALISBURY — A man was arrested after leading deputies on a chase in a stolen car in Rowan County, according to Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
James Nickerson, 22 from Charlotte, is facing charges of fleeing to elude, reckless driving to endanger and assault on emergency personnel with a deadly weapon. Deputies said he will also face additional charges from Salisbury police.
Deputies said there was a 15-year-old female passenger with Nickerson in the stolen car.
On Saturday morning, deputies were alerted about a gold Ford Focus that had been stolen in the area of Faith Road and Jake Alexander Boulevard in Salisbury.
Deputies found the stolen car headed down Bendix Drive.
In an attempt to avoid two Salisbury Police Department vehicles, the suspect swerved in the direction of the deputy’s patrol car, causing the officer to maneuver away from the suspect vehicle to avoid being struck, according to deputies.
Salisbury police then activated their emergency equipment and attempted a vehicle stop. The vehicle continued on Bendix Drive and led police on a pursuit on Interstate 85 South.
As the chase left Salisbury city limits, Salisbury police requested that sheriff’s department units take over the pursuit lead.
Deputies said that additional county units responded to the area in an attempt to clear the travel lanes on I-85 for stop stick deployment.
Deputies were set up at the China Grove exit with stop sticks, and deployed them as the chase approached. The suspect vehicle then swerved toward the deputies, causing a deputy to jump in front of his vehicle to avoid being struck.
The stop sticks were only effective on the back driver side tire, and the vehicle continued south on I-85, according to deputies.
Additional stop sticks were set at Old Beatty Ford Road and the Lane Street exits in an attempt to puncture the remaining tires.
During one of the stop stick attempts, a Salisbury vehicle was disabled after he was unable to avoid the hitting the sticks.
As the chase approached the Lane Street exit, the vehicle abruptly pulled to the side of the interstate.
Deputies then conducted a felony vehicle stop and took the driver into custody.
He was taken to the Rowan County Detention Center under a $75,000 secured bond.
